Healthy Choices at Chick-fil-A

Three new saladsMonday I was invited to the Chick-fil-A on 4th Street North in St. Petersburg to try out the new salads. I have been anxious to try these since I first saw the email from Chick-fil-A announcing the new salads.

We don’t usually eat fast food, but Chick-fil-A is our one exception. We have quite the history with Chick-fil-A and love any excuse to grab our favorite nuggets.

My husband and I’s first date was at Chick-fil-A in Gainesville, FL. I ordered the kid’s meal and we spent about two hours in the restaurant playing the game that came with it. We have toured corporate and seen the Bat Mobile that Truett Cathy purchased from the set of Batman and put in the lobby. To say we are obsessed with the place is an understatement.

We look forward to roadtrips, specifically for our Chick-fil-A lunch and milkshake stops.

Food is EssentialThis was my first experience getting to see behind the scenes at one of the restaurants. All the food is made fresh to order, nothing is kept for longer than 20 minutes! How impressive is that?

I love that the stores are now showing the calorie count for each item on the menu and the employees are really well educated on their products to guide patrons to healthy choices.

My husband and I tried all three of the new salads, plus the new dressings. I’m excited to have found some new favorites when I need to grab a bite to eat on the road.

Grilled Market Salad

The Grilled Market Salad is the lowest calorie choice. It is a mixture of romaine and baby greens topped with apples, blueberries, strawberries, blue cheese, and grilled chicken. All this for 180 calories. Add on the nuts, granola and dressing for a few additional calories. My husband voted this one his favorite. He thought the Zesty Apple Cider Vinaigrette paired great with the flavors of the salad.

Cobb Salad

The Cobb Salad is a fun choice on the same bed of romaine and baby mixed greens topped with tons of delicious ingredients; roasted corn, bacon, cheese, grape tomatoes, hard boiled egg, and chopped chicken nuggets. Yum, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Could you guess that this was my favorite. Of course it’s the highest calorie option and the suggested pairing of the new Avocado Lime Dressing is the most calorie packed dressing, but dang it’s good!

I order Cobb salads often and as a trick to keep some of the fats down I only use a small amount of the ranch dressing for the flavor and then I use a balsamic vinaigrette  to finish dressing the salad. If you want to try to stay on the healthier side with this salad I would suggest giving that dressing combo a try.

Asian SaladAnd finally, the new Asian Salad. Once again on the same bed of greens (I love this combo and am so glad that they don’t use iceberg), the Asian Salad has mandarin oranges, sliced chicken nuggets, and comes with a bag of almonds and wonton crisps. The suggested Honey Sesame Dressing is the lowest calorie choice of the new dressings and goes great with this salad. We both decided this was our second favorite salad, although it was a close race because they were all so good.

Both the Cobb and Asian salad could be ordered with grilled chicken rather than the nuggets, something I am looking forward to trying soon. That will make my Cobb favorite a little healthier also.

I am so impressed with the new salads at Chick-fil-A and love that I am able to swing by and grab these when I need a quick meal. I foresee these being a new roadtrip favorite, along with our milkshake, of course!
